Coastal Bend College Men’s Basketball Team initiated their 2011-12 season on Tuesday night (Nov. 1) with a home game against the Randolph Air Force Base Ramblers. The game tipped off at 7:30 p.m. with a nice-sized Cougar crowd in attendance, including CBC President Dr. Thomas Baynum.

From the opening tipoff, the Cougars took command of the game, scoring the first three buckets. The Cougars continued to pour it on throughout the first half, never allowing the opposition the ability to take the lead. It wasn’t until midway through the second half that the Ramblers started to shift the momentum in their favor. However, the dream for a second half comeback was quickly crushed with two big threes from CBC’s Brandon Golden, a freshman player from John H. Reagan High School in Austin, followed by the exclamation point dunk from David Weathers, a first-year college player from L.B. Johnson Early College High School in Austin.

The Golden-Weathers action forced the head coach for the Ramblers to take a timeout in hopes of keeping the momentum from switching back to the Cougars. But the Cougars weren’t done just yet! Following the timeout, Tevin Shedd, a returning athlete from Toledo, Ohio, and Dejon Taylor, a returning player from San Antonio, forced back-to-back turnovers that resulted in easy buckets. This stretched the lead to 20 and cemented the victory for Coastal Bend College, who would go on to coast to an 87-62 final.

The Cougars showed an impressive ability to distribute the ball and were able to get points on the board from 12 different players. # 1 Golden lead the team with 17 points, 12 of which came from beyond the three-point line. He was followed by the 6’11” sophomore from Miami, Fla. Charles Mells and Shedd who also ended the night with a double-digit scoring effort.

CBC Head Basketball Coach is Larry Mendez. The assistant coach is Colt Walker. CBC competes in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 14 sport in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s softball and women’s volleyball.
